When first learning Puppyhammer, the prop takes a lot of abuse which the SpinOptic Hammer is not designed for. This also gives you the chance to fine tune your preferred sizing.

Oxbow — Safety Information

Read this information completely before using Oxbow. Keep it with the product for future reference.

WARNING

Oxbow is a high-speed kinetic performance prop, not a toy.

Its moving heads can cause serious injury, including injury to the eyes, face, mouth, ears, nose, head, neck, and other parts of the body. Loss of control, entanglement, or component failure can result in injury to the user or to other people.

Oxbow can also damage pets and property.

These risks exist during normal use. The product is not indestructible, and no component should be assumed to be incapable of failure.

Oxbow is intended for experienced adult users who understand the risks associated with high-speed flow equipment.

1. Understand the Risk

Oxbow combines moving mass, speed, flexible tethers, electronics, and a removable lithium-ion battery.

The heads can travel rapidly through a large area around the user. A mistake, loss of control, unexpected movement, entanglement, or component failure can change the path of a head very quickly.

Treat Oxbow with the same seriousness you would give other high-risk physical activities. Skill reduces risk but does not eliminate it.

Serious injury remains possible even when Oxbow is used correctly.

2. Injury to the User

The heads can strike the body during normal use or loss of control.

Particular care is required around the:

• Eyes

• Face

• Mouth and teeth

• Ears

• Nose

• Head and neck

• Hands and fingers

• Joints and other vulnerable areas

Do not assume that the silicone/rubber head makes an impact harmless. A soft exterior does not eliminate the momentum of a moving object.

Eye and face protection

Eye and face injuries are a significant risk.

Do not assume that generic eye protection automatically makes Oxbow safer. Depending on its construction, fit, and the way an impact occurs, protective equipment can alter how impact forces are transmitted and may increase injury in some circumstances.

Choose any protective equipment only after considering the specific hazards of Oxbow. No protective equipment should be considered a guarantee against injury.

3. Tether, Entanglement, and Loss-of-Control Hazards

The tethers can move rapidly and can wrap around:

• Arms or legs

• Hands or fingers

• The neck

• Clothing

• Equipment or other objects

Entanglement can cause sudden changes in the motion of the heads and can result in impact, falls, or other injury.

Never intentionally wrap a moving tether around your body or another person.

Maintain enough clearance that the tethers and heads cannot readily contact people, structures, equipment, or other obstacles.

If a tether becomes entangled, do not attempt to recover control while the heads are moving. Stop safely before attempting to disentangle it.

4. Component Failure

Oxbow is subjected to repeated bending, tension, impact, and vibration during use. Components wear over time.

The most important mechanical inspection point is the root of the fiber-optic cable where it attaches to the head.

Cracking at this attachment point can progress to complete separation of the head. If the attachment fails while the head is moving, the head can become an uncontrolled projectile.

Inspect this area before every session.

If you find any crack at the cable attachment point:

Do not use Oxbow. Replace the tether before further use.

Do not attempt to repair a damaged attachment yourself unless specifically authorized by LanternSmith.

The silicone shell surrounding the head is also a wear item.

If the shell develops a tear or other evident damage:

Do not use the affected head. Replace it before further use.

5. Pre-Session Inspection

Inspect Oxbow before every session.

Do not use the product if any inspection item fails.

Tether attachment

Check the root of each fiber-optic cable where it attaches to the head.

• Look specifically for cracks.

• Check the entire visible attachment area.

• If any crack is present, replace the tether before use.

Head shell

Inspect the silicone shell around each head.

• Look for tears, splits, or other evident damage.

• If damaged, replace the head before use.

Battery

Inspect the 18350 battery.

Do not use a battery that is:

• Swollen

• Leaking

• Physically damaged

• Showing damage to its protective wrapper

• Behaving abnormally while charging

• Showing other signs of failure

Replace a questionable battery rather than attempting to continue using it.

Battery compartment

Before operation:

• Confirm that the battery is correctly oriented.

• Never insert the battery with reversed polarity.

• Confirm that the battery is properly seated.

• Confirm that the battery compartment is securely closed.

Device behavior

Observe Oxbow for abnormal operation.

If you observe unexpected resets, erratic behavior, abnormal flickering, unexpected changes in output, or other unusual firmware or electrical behavior:

Stop using the product and contact LanternSmith for inspection, repair, or replacement.

Heat

Oxbow can become warm during normal operation.

This is expected.

However:

If Oxbow becomes too hot to touch, move away from it immediately and discontinue use.

Do not continue operating a device that has reached an abnormal temperature.

Unusual sounds or physical behavior

Pay attention to anything that feels or sounds different from normal operation, including unexpected rattling, vibration, movement, or other changes.

If something seems wrong, stop using the product and investigate before continuing.

6. Lithium-Ion Battery Safety

Oxbow uses a removable 18350 lithium-ion battery.

Lithium-ion batteries can cause fire, burns, injury, or property damage if improperly selected, damaged, installed, charged, stored, or handled.

Battery requirements

Use only an appropriate, undamaged 18350 lithium-ion battery meeting the specifications supplied with your Oxbow.

Do not substitute a battery merely because it has the same physical size.

Do not use an unprotected cell where a protected cell is specified.

Do not use batteries with damaged wrappers, exposed metal, swelling, leakage, corrosion, or other physical damage.

Correct polarity

Always install the battery in the orientation indicated by the product.

Reverse polarity can damage the electronics and may create a hazardous condition.

Charging

Charge the battery only with a charger appropriate for that specific lithium-ion cell.

• Follow the battery and charger's instructions.

• Do not charge a damaged battery.

• Do not continue charging a battery that behaves unusually.

• Do not leave a battery unattended if the charging equipment's instructions prohibit unattended charging.

• Do not use improvised charging methods.

If a battery becomes unusually hot, swells, leaks, vents, or otherwise behaves abnormally while charging:

Stop charging and move away from the battery.

Do not attempt to continue using or charging a questionable cell.

Storage and transport

Protect batteries from:

• Short circuits

• Crushing or puncture

• Excessive heat

• Water or other damaging conditions

• Contact with conductive metal objects

Store and transport lithium-ion batteries in accordance with applicable local requirements and the battery manufacturer's instructions.

Never place a loose lithium-ion battery in a pocket, bag, or container where its terminals can contact metal objects.

Dispose of damaged or unwanted lithium-ion batteries through an appropriate battery-recycling or hazardous-waste service. Do not place lithium-ion batteries in ordinary household waste.

7. Protect Other People

Oxbow is not appropriate for use around uninvolved people.

Before beginning a session, establish a clear operating area and make sure that people cannot unexpectedly enter it.

Keep a substantial separation from:

• Spectators

• Children

• Pets

• Other performers

• People passing through the area

Do not assume that someone watching from a distance understands the range or trajectory of the heads.

Never use Oxbow in a crowded area.

8. Protect Pets

Pets can move unpredictably and may not recognize the danger posed by Oxbow.

Keep dogs, cats, and other animals completely outside the operating area.

Do not rely on a pet's obedience or on its ability to understand the danger.

A curious animal entering the space at the wrong moment can create a collision or entanglement hazard for both the animal and the user.

9. Protect Property

The heads and tethers can damage objects they contact.

Do not operate Oxbow near objects that could be damaged by impact, including:

• Glass

• Mirrors

• Electronics

• Lighting equipment

• Vehicles

• Furniture

• Artwork

• Fragile structures

• Valuable or irreplaceable objects

Adequate clearance means more than having enough room to perform a trick. Account for the full area that the heads and tethers could occupy if your timing, orientation, or control changes unexpectedly.

10. Choose the Environment Carefully

Use Oxbow only where you have adequate space and stable footing.

Before each session, consider:

• Available clearance in every direction

• Ceiling height and overhead obstacles

• Ground conditions

• Slippery or wet surfaces

• Uneven terrain

• Nearby people and animals

• Fragile or hazardous objects

• Weather and environmental conditions

• Your ability to see and control the operating area

Do not allow environmental conditions to become an additional source of loss of control.

11. Skill, Fatigue, and Judgment

Oxbow requires coordination, spatial awareness, and familiarity with the dynamics of the equipment.

Do not use it when your ability to control the product is impaired by:

• Fatigue

• Alcohol

• Recreational drugs

• Medication or other substances that impair coordination or judgment

• Distraction

If your control deteriorates during a session, stop.

There is no trick, maneuver, or performance worth continuing through loss of control.

12. Modification and Repair

Do not modify the product's heads, tethers, attachment points, electronics, battery compartment, or safety-critical components.

Do not substitute attachment methods, adhesives, cables, batteries, or other components unless they are specifically approved for the product.

A modification that appears mechanically sound may nevertheless change the behavior or failure characteristics of the product.

If a safety-critical component is damaged or questionable, contact LanternSmith.

13. If Something Goes Wrong

If you lose control:

1. Stop attempting to perform.

2. Move yourself and others away from the moving heads if you can do so safely.

3. Do not attempt to catch a rapidly moving head.

4. Once the product has stopped, inspect it before considering further use.

If a head detaches, a tether is damaged, the device behaves abnormally, or a battery shows signs of failure:

Do not resume use until the cause has been identified and the affected component has been replaced or the product has been inspected and cleared for use.

14. When in Doubt, Stop

The most important safety rule is simple:

If something looks, feels, sounds, or behaves differently from normal, stop using Oxbow.

Do not continue a session because a problem appears minor.

Do not assume a component will survive “one more session.”

Do not attempt to determine whether a crack, damaged battery, abnormal temperature, or unusual electronic behavior is safe by continuing to operate the product.

Intended Use

Oxbow is a specialized performance prop for experienced adult users.

It is designed to be used with an understanding that risk cannot be eliminated through design, skill, inspection, or protective equipment. These measures can reduce risk, but they cannot make the product fail-proof or eliminate the possibility of serious injury or property damage.

By using Oxbow, you are responsible for understanding its hazards, inspecting it before each session, using appropriate components and batteries, and choosing an environment appropriate for its operation.
